Santa Maddalena Alta and the Val di Funes

Landscape Photography – Italian Dolomites

Landscape Photography – Italian Dolomites

The 25th October to 2nd November 2017 saw myself accompanied by my wife to the Italian Dolomites in South Tyrol.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site the 18 peaks which go to make up this extraordinary landscape are a must for any landscape photographer who loves mountain scenery.

The trip itself was split into two parts. This was done due to the huge area that the Dolomites cover. I did wonder whether it should be split into three different parts but came to the conclusion that the majority of the best bits can be seen having two different bases.

Our hire car started out having about 7500km on the clock and by the time we had finished, it was just over 10000km which gives you an idea as to how much driving can be needed if you’re trying to cover it all in a short period of time.

For the most part of the time, the weather was mostly clear skies with some high cirrus cloud but there were some beautiful dawn skies too early on when we were based in the Val di Funes.

The overall aim of the trip wasn’t just to capture the autumn colour but also to get a thorough understanding of the area as I and another photographer are planning a photography workshop and tour in the Dolomites for October/ November 2018.

When it comes to workshops I want to ensure that participants get the best that they can from an area as well as ensuring that we are in town to eat when the restaurants are open. We found that it wasn’t always easy finding somewhere to eat on a Sunday or when there is a bank holiday such as the 1st November.

So enjoy this first part of two from the Italian Dolomites. And if you’re interested in joining me next year for a photography workshop then get in touch!
