Photos of Kathmandu

A Portfolio of my Kathmandu Photos

Julian Elliott

Here you can browse a carefully curated selection of my best photos of Kathmandu, each image offering a window into the city’s rich culture, vibrant streets, and timeless traditions. My goal with this gallery is not only to present travel photography but also to convey the unique stories, colours, and emotions that define life in Nepal’s capital.

You’ll discover that Kathmandu is a city like no other. Nestled in the Kathmandu Valley and surrounded by rolling hills and the distant peaks of the mighty Himalayas, it serves as the cultural, political and spiritual heart of Nepal. The photos of Kathmandu you will find here highlight the city’s distinctive blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences. From the towering spires of ancient temples to the prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the architecture and atmosphere reflect centuries of devotion and artistry.

One of the central themes of my gallery is the incredible diversity of the city’s sacred sites. The images showcase some of Kathmandu’s most iconic landmarks, including Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, where prayer wheels spin endlessly in the hands of devoted pilgrims. You will also find photos of Kathmandu’s Boudhanath Square, with its massive Great Stupa, where tradition and daily life seamlessly intertwine. The sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath is another highlight, where funeral rituals on the banks of the Bagmati River reveal the spiritual depth and cultural richness of the city, along with Sadhus who live here and provide guidance to those who need it.

Beyond the temples and monuments, my photos of Kathmandu aim to capture the everyday rhythm of the city. Kathmandu is alive with energy, from the crowded bazaars of Asan and Indra Chowk to the narrow alleyways where small shops sell spices, textiles, and handmade crafts. The people of Kathmandu bring incredible warmth and resilience to their daily lives, and their portraits are among my favourite images to share. Each face tells a story, whether it is a monk in saffron robes, a street vendor arranging fresh produce, or children playing against the backdrop of centuries-old shrines.

The light in Kathmandu offers endless opportunities for a photographer. Early mornings reveal a soft, golden glow as the city wakes up, while evenings often bring dramatic skies that paint the valley in shades of orange and purple. My photos of Kathmandu attempt to capture these fleeting moments in time, offering a sense of atmosphere and place that goes beyond words.

Travel photography is not only about documenting locations but also about evoking emotion and curiosity. In this gallery, I want you to feel as if you are walking through the city yourself. Whether it’s hearing the temple bells, smelling the incense, or joining the flow of people moving through the lively streets. Each of these photos of Kathmandu is meant to transport you, sparking a sense of adventure and inspiring a deeper appreciation for Nepal’s capital.

For travellers, Kathmandu is often the first step on a journey into the Himalayas, but it is also a destination in its own right. The photos of Kathmandu in this collection remind us that the city’s beauty lies not only in its monuments but also in its details. From the texture of weathered brick walls, the colours of traditional saris, and the laughter echoing through courtyards. By pausing to look closely, we discover that the everyday life of Kathmandu is just as photogenic as its most famous landmarks.

This gallery represents the travel side of my photography, combining architectural shots, candid street scenes, and intimate portraits. Together, these photos of Kathmandu offer a broad perspective of a city that continues to inspire me with every visit. Whether you are a fellow traveller, a photography enthusiast, or someone simply curious about Nepal, I invite you to explore these images and experience Kathmandu through my lens.
